How To Replace Lincoln Headlights

Headlights are one of the essential parts of your vehicle. Not only do they help you see, but they also help other drivers see you. Since most cars have dual headlamps, and both need to work correctly for optimum safety, it's essential to know how to replace them if necessary. Doing so can be done by anyone with basic skills and knowledge of their car's electrical system. Still, we recommend having an auto mechanic inspect the wiring before disconnecting any electrical connectors from within the engine bay area due to potential dangers from doing so incorrectly. If unsure, make an appointment with the Lincoln service center today.

Know Your Car’s Bulb

If you've ever tried replacing a headlight bulb, you know that many different types of bulbs are available. HID headlights (high-intensity discharge) use an entirely different kind of filament than halogen or LED bulbs, each of which has its unique characteristics. The type of bulb your car uses will be labeled on the headlight assembly itself; if it needs to be clarified by looking at them, check before installing any new parts!

Park Your Car

Ensure that your vehicle is in an area where it can remain safely parked. Set your parking brake and put your vehicle in park. Then, switch off the engine and remove the keys from the ignition. Open the hood of your car and locate the headlight assembly you wish to replace (usually located on each side of your car). Place a damp cloth over each headlight bulb to keep them from getting dirty while you work on them. Loosen and remove any screws holding the headlight in place, and set them aside in an organized manner, so they don't get mixed up with other parts when reinstalling. Remember not to touch or disturb any electrical connections near or around the bulb you wish to replace.

Remove the Trim Cover(s).

You must remove the trim cover(s) to access the headlight assembly. Some vehicles have one or two trim covers that need to be removed. The process of eliminating these can vary based on your car. However, most will require a trim tool to pry off the cover and reveal any screws underneath it. You may also use a rubber mallet if plastic clips holding down the trim body are difficult to remove by hand.

Inspect the Electrical Connector

If you notice any damage or corrosion, replacing the entire assembly is unnecessary. The headlight can be removed and a new one installed without replacing the wiring harness. Use a screwdriver to push the tab on the side of each connector in opposite directions. Remove the bulb from the headlight assembly by pulling it straight out; be careful not to touch any of its electrical terminals. Check that you have disconnected the correct connector, as some cars will have multiple wires and connectors for one headlight bulb.

Remove the Bulb

Once you've removed the old bulb from your headlight assembly, it's time to install the new one. Take a socket wrench and loosen the bolt holding your light in place. Use caution when removing the bulb from its housing; if you don't touch its glass surface with your hand), there is no risk of breaking it. You may also use a bulb puller to remove the old bulb.

Insert New Bulb

Once you have a new headlight bulb installed, the next step is to make sure it is connected correctly. The electrical connector must be plugged into its socket and then tightened by hand to ensure a secure fit. If your vehicle has more than one headlight bulb in each housing, you will need to move on to inserting the second new headlight bulb.

Test Your New Bulb

After putting back the parts, test your bulb. Hopefully, we've been able to walk you through replacing your headlight and returning to the road in no time.
